Don't let your financial means get in the way of a life-changing opportunity.
The Northwest Outward Bound School is committed to offering our life-changing programs to all young people, regardless of their ability to contribute to tuition costs or purchase necessary gear. The School offers financial aid through our general scholarship fund as well as full tuition remission through our Pinnacle Scholarship Program. We believe in our programs and at Northwest Outward Bound School we want to make them available to as many people as possible. If the cost of a course is beyond your financial means, you may be eligible for a scholarship or financing option.
The average percentage we provide is between 20-30% of full tuition, but it is directly based on need and the motivation to attend demonstrated by the student's application. Our scholarship committee will determine how much we can offer you after reviewing each application on an individual basis. We try to help all interested students find a way to make our courses affordable, but cannot guarantee that we'll be able to give everyone scholarship assistance. There is a $500 deposit/application fee that must be paid at the time of enrollment, which is refundable if the scholarship award does not meet your needs. Please note that all scholarship applicants are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and awards are strictly based on need and scholarship money availability.
For those who require additional time to secure full tuition payment, we do offer a payment schedule. However, full payment of tuition must be complete prior to your course start date. This assistance is limited and is awarded on a first come, first served basis. Please contact us directly for more information.
Submit - Need-Based Scholarship Applicationand Tax Forms. In the scholarship application, please explain any financial circumstances that we cannot see in your tax forms that will help our scholarship committee determine if there is any assistance available for you. Parents/guardians of applicants will write this and may also want to include their reasons for wanting their child to attend Northwest Outward Bound. Send copies of your most recent 1040 tax forms (dependents need to send in their parent/guardian's tax forms) or equivalent along with your application and the other materials. If you do not file for taxes, we need something that represents you or your parent/guardian's annual income before we can consider offering a scholarship. Please blackout social security numbers.
Personal Video - Please send us a short video telling us about yourself. Why do you want to take a course? What are you hoping to learn while on Outward Bound? What makes you a great candidate for a scholarship? If you do not have a way to make a video, we require a personal essay reflecting this same information. Send to [email protected] with your name and course number in the subject line of your email. *Videos submitted become property of NWOBS.
Reviewing Completed Scholarship Applications
It may take approximately two weeks for the scholarship committee to determine if we can offer you a scholarship. Applicants are REQUIRED to follow all procedures and requested due dates to be considered for a scholarship.
We WILL NOT evaluate your request for financial support until we receive and approve the materials all applicants are required to complete and return to us. Any delay in meeting your due dates will affect the amount of financial aid awarded (delays can be interpreted as a lack of commitment or motivation) and your registration status. You will NOT be refunded the $150 non-refundable Enrollment Processing Fee if you cancel (or are cancelled from course due to lack of communication) before we are able to review your scholarship materials.
When this has been determined, someone will contact you to explain the committee's decision.
If you have questions about anything, please contact us at 503-946-3404 option 3 or email us at [email protected]
Pinnacle Scholarship Program
Since 1992, the Pinnacle Scholarship Program, which started on the west coast, has provided hundreds of young people across the country an opportunity to build character, develop leadership skills, and understand the importance of community service. Pinnacle Scholars are all eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. The Program depends on partners, often teachers, counselors, community leaders, or youth advocates, who are dedicated to helping youth reach their full potential and who understand the impact of an Outward Bound course. Partners spread the word about scholarship opportunities, identify and recruit candidates, support students through the application process, help prepare them for their course, and assist them in coordinating their mandatory post-course service project. Current Pinnacle Partners in Oregon and Washington include: Summer Search, Liberty Bell High School, Native American Youth and Family Center, Reynolds High School, Neil Armstrong Middle School, Upward Bound Tonasket and Portland Community College's TRIO Talent Search.
