Northwest Outward Bound School hires Basecamp Cooks from a variety of different backgrounds. We believe that this not only enhances the depth of our community but strengthens our ability to serve all people, on and off course.
Basecamp Cooks are creative, motivated and enthusiastic about planning and preparing nutritious lunches and dinners for staff staying at our Redmond, OR and Mazama, WA basecamps. Basecamp Cooks work under the direct supervision of Logistics Managers and are responsible for planning and preparing nutritious meals, ordering food within budget, and accommodating special diets and food preferences.
There is a wonderful community at each basecamp. Typically there are 30 – 40 staff including instructors, administrators, course directors, and logistics coordinators. We start each day at 8:30am with a meeting to share daily updates before completing morning chores. While staff are off contract, they can enjoy the amenities provided at base - showers, WiFi, housing, and food - while recuperating or adventuring before their next course.
Amazing recreation opportunities are located near each basecamp. The Deschutes River runs through the Odin Falls Basecamp property and staff enjoy close proximity to Smith Rock, Three Sisters Wilderness, and the city of Bend. Fun Rock climbing crag is 100 feet away from the Mazama Basecamp and stellar alpine climbing at Washington Pass, adventures in the Sawtooth Wilderness, and the rural yet progressive town of Winthrop nearby.
