Northwest Outward Bound School looks to hire Instructors that have at least 3 - 4 years of extensive and comparable experiential/outdoor experiences. Instructors must carry the responsibility of course quality, safety, and complete the vision while working diligently with their co-instructor. Every Instructor brings their authentic and unique self to their role. The work is challenging yet rewarding and demands humility, creativity, flexibility, good humor, determination, and compassion.
A Day In The Life for Basecamp Lead Instructors
On course, Instructors are intentionally designing course to meet the needs of their students, an appropriate progression of the levels of responsibility, and meet our outcomes of character development, leadership skills, and ethic of service towards others and the environment. It takes skill and grace to empower students, set up structure for accountability, facilitate difficult conversations, guide self-discovery, and more. While supervising students in the field, the Instructor is coaching and mentoring to their Assistant Instructor to enhance their impact on course.
After course, you can enjoy the community at the basecamp. Typically there is 40 – 50 staff for each basecamp including instructors, administrators, course directors, and logistics coordinators. To start off our daily routine, we conduct morning meeting at 8:30 am to allow for us to come together, share daily events, learnings, and perform cleanliness chores. While staff are off contract, staff can live in staff housing and enjoy meals provided by the cook with a one hour work trade in exchange. Staff can enjoy the amenities provided at base, showers, wifi, and food while recouping before their next course. Amazing recreation opportunities are located near each basecamp. The Deschutes river runs through the Odin Falls Basecamp property with bouldering along its shores, while nearby, staff enjoy the close proximity to Smith Rock, Three Sisters Wilderness, and the city of Bend. Fun Rock climbing crag is 100 feet away from the Mazama Basecamp and nearby staff enjoy stellar alpine climbing at Washington Pass, adventures in the Sawtooth Wilderness, and the rural yet progressive town of Winthrop.
Luke O’Neill, staff member with 24 years of experience declares, “I feel blessed to be working alongside deeply committed and superbly talented educators who 1) act daily to create a healthy and uplifting community, 2) give the best of themselves to the student they serve, and 3) strive with all of their might to live the values that stand at the heart of Outward Bound’s mission.”
