We believe everyone has unrealized potential. Through challenging experiences, we ask our students to reach further than they thought possible - whether that be physical, emotional, or interpersonal. We believe that when we experience the unrealized strength we possess, we will not settle for being less.
Northwest Outward Bound classic wilderness courses are an essential confidence-building experience to help individuals discover strengths they didn’t know they had. Available to students of all ages and circumstances, these programs are based in the stunning Pacific Northwest wilderness where students will encounter leadership, skill-building, and team-building challenges.
In partnership with local schools and school districts, Northwest Outward Bound School serves students of all ages and circumstances by delivering character and leadership building programs in urban settings. By designing programs in collaboration with communities, teachers and educators, we bring the wilderness and classroom together to build character, and inspire self-discovery — leading to success in school, their future, and their communities. Our school programs vary in length from one day to semester-long programs.
Our Gap Year & Semester expedition courses are the ideal alternative for college-age students looking for something beyond the traditional classroom environment and for those who want to learn by doing. No other Outward Bound experience is as in-depth, absorbing or comprehensive as our wilderness semester courses. These 30-day to 85-day courses are unique opportunities to gain real wilderness skills and develop skills in decision making, problem solving, leadership and teamwork.
The Outward Bound 50-day Instructor Development courses are designed to provide participants with the skills and experiences they need to begin a career in the outdoor experiential education industry. Outward Bound has trained many educators and offers a premier learning experience. By learning 'hands-on,' students will gain a better understanding of both the technical and teaching skills that will prepare them for an entry-level position as an outdoor or experiential education educator.
Women-Only courses offer a rare experience: freedom from preconceived notions of traditional gender roles. Join two female instructors and other diverse women of all ages and different fitness levels in an outdoor experience of fun, growth and self-discovery.
Wilderness expeditions designed specifically for veterans and active service members transitioning back to civilian lives. Veterans expeditions help to reinforce the gratification, confidence, and self-worth that comes with working within a group, and build the skills necessary to successfully return to life after wartime service.
Designed to provide respectful healing experiences in a wilderness environment, these courses implement personal growth methodologies and a simple support model that honors the griever. The grief work that is purposefully woven into every aspect of the curriculum is not intended to provide therapy, but rather to facilitate an environment where young people can connect, build relationships, and share in a relevant healing experience with real-world outcomes. As participants tackle problem-solving challenges and engage in high impact activities such as rock climbing or ropes courses, students experience moments of self-discovery and also reinforce their new community of support – their grieving crewmates. Thanks to our donors, all participants receive reduced tuition.
