We bring Outward Bound values—courage, belonging, reflection, and physical engagement—to the classroom.
Learning Through Experience
Northwest Outward Bound School brings challenge and collaboration into the classroom through team building and character development activities. Our instructors are skilled in facilitating social-emotional development and challenging students to reach further than they thought possible. Through shared experiences and successes, Outward Bound students build resilience and create lasting relationships with peers.
Our programs are designed for middle and high school students, focusing on transition periods when students are vulnerable to disengaging from school. School programs are typically once per week for 8 weeks, including an Insight Day field trip outside of the classroom. Each Northwest Outward Bound School program is tailored to the needs, culture, and priorities of the community.
Through every Outward Bound course, students discover skills that last a lifetime, compassion for themselves and others, and a new understanding of what they can achieve.
Activities include:
Challenge and ropes courses facilitated by Outward Bound Instructors at Camp Fire Columbia's Camp Namanu near Sandy, Oregon.
Rock climbing with our Outward Bound Instructors at the Mazama Mountaineering Center in Portland, Oregon, and outdoors at local areas like Broughton Bluff.
Community service projects in partnership with various Portland and Multnomah county organizations.
